Welcome to my Portfolio!

As a recent graduate from the University of Washington iSchool, I aspire to obtain a position as a public services librarian, with a particular interest in the area of youth services.  Currently, I was most recently employed as the Children's Services Librarian at the Magnolia neighborhood branch of the Seattle Public Library (SPL).  I have also worked as a Student Librarian in the Reference Department of SPL's Central branch.
I am passionate about library work, and feel that what the public library provides for a community is invaluable.

My experiences working at SPL, along with several library-related volunteer and extracurricular activities, have prepared, qualified and inspired me for continued work as a librarian.  Through my work with patrons in person, on the phone, or online, I have learned that providing excellent customer service is essential to a successful library experience, and I strive to always provide a high level of customer service to each patron I assist.  I am a motivated and dedicated employee, who is always looking for ways to learn more about the profession from my colleagues.  I have worked with my managers to shadow librarians or work in nearly every department in my library in order to broaden my base of knowledge and become the most well rounded librarian I can be.  I also am always looking to improve the services the library provides. For example, in addition to my regular duties, I frequently participate in the SPL “Shelf Talk” blog, and I leapt at the opportunity to create book displays to promote our collection in my department.  While I have experience working with patrons of all ages, my true passion lies in youth librarianship. I have worked with both children and teenagers and various jobs, including my Children's Librarian position in Seattle.  I have created and performed weekly preschool and toddler story times, run literacy-related events, and stayed familiar and current with children’s literature through school and work.  I have also participated in Directed Fieldwork internship experiences at the King County Library System's Youth Service Center Library, located in the city's Juvenile Detention Facility, and the John Stanford International School.  Both of these internship gave me valuable experiences working with children of all ages, and various ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.  Additionally, I took all of the youth-related classes offered by the iSchool in order to fulfill the requirements for the Library Media Specialist Endorsement.

While in school, I was also President of the iYouth student organization, and Vice-President of the UW's Student Chapter of the American Library Association. Through these organizations I have organized many events, most notably a youth-services oriented conference geared towards helping fellow students and colleagues gain professional development and networking opportunities.
I look forward to using these experiences, and my ever-growing knowledge in this field, in my future career.
